Cold Weather Tips
With temperature dropping and a forecast for continued cold weather in our region, Community Care would like to remind those of you who know an elderly person, or an individual with a disability, to make a house call.
There are many things that can be done to help the elderly and individuals with disabilities to remain safe and comfortable during cold weather. Examples include:
- Check the furnace is working properly and air filter is clean
- Set their thermostat to at least 65 degrees to prevent hypothermia. This will also help to prevent pipes from freezing
- Put plastic insulation on their windows to control drafts
- Make sure their pantry is stocked with nutritious food items, in case they get snowed in
- Ensure gas and/or electric appliances are working properly for food preparation
- Shovel and salt their sidewalk and driveway to prevent ice buildup and increase traction
- Replace the rubber tip on their cane or walker legs to avoid it from becoming slippery especially when wet
- If the individual uses their vehicle, make sure their fuel tank is at least half full to help prevent frozen fuel lines and to help ensure they can run their engine for heat due to unexpected weather-related traffic conditions
- Provide your phone number and other emergency contact numbers so they can get help if needed
- Check on them often during severe weather
